House Hunting? Use Evernote!
Let’s talk about a fantastic application called “Evernote,” and how to use Evernote for home search. We understand that in your search, it can be difficult to “keep things straight.” After seeing many homes, it is difficult to remember what features you loved and which homes they go with. Using Evernote for home search helps immensely!
Quick Evernote Overview
Evernote is an application that is a super note-taking tool. You can use the application to save text notes, voice/audio notes, photos, and even documents. Notes you save are stored in the “cloud,” so that you are always able to access them. You create your own Evernote account, and anything you save synchronizes across multiple devices. For example, if you see a great open house and take notes about it in the Evernote app on your phone, you can view the notes on your computer or iPad later on!
The app is available on all smartphone platforms:
- iOS (iPhone, iPad, iPod)
- Android (Smartphones and Tablets)
- BlackBerry (Legacy and new BlackBerry OS 10 devices, BlackBerry Playbook Tablet)
- Windows Phone
There are Evernote apps available for Windows and Mac computers. You can also log in to your account on the Evernote website to access your notes. One of my favorite tools is their web clipper extension for the Chrome web browser. This lets you very quickly and easily save webpages to your Evernote account. (This is great in using Evernote for Home Search!) Click here to get the evernote web clipper extension for your web browser of choice.
Another great feature within the app is the ability to keep your notes organized. You can create a “Notebook,” for a subject, and keep all related notes within that particular notebook. You can even take related notebooks and create a “Stack.” Also, you can add “tags,” to each of your notes that can help you locate specific notes quickly. My favorite feature is that even in photos with words, like on receipts, the search feature can recognize those words. Using Evernote for home search helps keep you organized!
How to Use Evernote For Home Search
Here are guidelines to follow in using Evernote for home search.
Create a new notebook for each home that is of interest to you in your home search. I like to label the notebook with the home’s address for reference.
If you are starting to create more than a few notebooks, go ahead and drag those notebooks on top of each other and name the Stack “Home Search.”
Now, you can go into each home’s notebook and save your notes. One step is to find the property’s MLS listing on a website, like here on stevequanstromgroup.com. Use the Evernote web clipper to save that webpage as a note to the appropriate notebook. Now you can quickly reference this information at any point in time in the Evernote app on your phone or computer. I love this convenience in using Evernote for home search!
If you visit a home with your realtor or attend an open house, be sure to take notes! Whether you record your voice making notes of your thoughts, or typing it in to the app, create those new notes in the appropriate notebook. If you check out our blog post on taking notes at an open house, you can get a free note sheet. This note sheet can be printed out, and you can write your notes about each home you see. When you are done making your notes, take a photo of the note sheet and save it to Evernote.
Make sure to use your smartphone to take pictures of homes you see as well. Save these photos in Evernote under the appropriate notebook for future reference. Use the in-app camera, or the phone’s normal camera and input the photo into the app. Are you getting an idea yet of how handy Evernote for home search is?!
To use Evernote for home search, be sure you make use of the “tag,” functionality. You can tag each note with terms that help you stay organized, and help you find that note again later. If you make notes on a home with a great kitchen, you can make a tag “Fabulous Kitchen.” Even if you do this for multiple homes, you can very quickly search your tags and pull up only notes with that tag. Making Evernote for home search very powerful.
Evernote is a fantastic collaboration tool. One of my favorite features is that you can email and share notes with others. So if you were able to preview a home and your significant-other could not make it, you can email your notes to them immediately. Also, if you visit an open house without your realtor and fell in love with the home, email them your notes on it! This can be a great help to your agent to not only see the home you like, but they can get an understanding as to why you love it so much based on your notes. This is another feature that makes Evernote for home search very effective.
We hope this post on using Evernote for home search is helpful to you and your real estate goals. Keeping track of seeing so many homes on the market can be a challenge, and we want to help make it easier for you.
